During the initial interview, the psychiatrist will lay the groundwork for a comprehensive evaluation of your mental health needs. This discussion helps the psychiatrist understand your concerns and determine the best approach for your treatment.

- Reviewing personal and medical history: your medical and psychiatric background, family mental health history, social relationships, employment, and substance use.
- Risk assessment: Potential risk of harm to yourself or others is evaluated, particularly in cases involving severe depression or psychosis.
- Diagnostic testing: For individuals without previous psychiatric history, laboratory tests may be requested to identify underlying medical conditions such as thyroid disorders or vitamin deficiencies that could present with psychiatric symptoms.
The initial intake appointment usually lasts between one and two hours. To prepare, individuals may be asked to complete paperwork and are encouraged to make a list of their symptoms, medications, and major life events.
